Ryanair is implementing a significant update to its ticketing process starting November 12. The airline will transition to issuing only ‘100% Digital Boarding Passes’ (DBP), discontinuing physical tickets at most airports. Originally planned for May 2025, this change aims to reduce costs, save approximately 300 tonnes of paper annually, and provide travelers with real-time flight updates.
To address potential concerns, The Mirror has compiled key questions and answers about the upcoming transition, sourced from official information by Ryanair. Travelers can also find detailed information on the airline’s website.
Passengers flying with Ryanair can complete online check-in via the Ryanair website or the Ryanair App, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. It is advised that passengers complete the check-in process before reaching the airport to avoid additional charges.
Upon check-in, a Digital Boarding Pass will automatically generate in the Ryanair App. This digital pass should be presented at both airport security and the boarding gate prior to the flight. Ryanair emphasizes that this method is faster, more convenient, and less stressful compared to traditional paper tickets.
Addressing concerns about losing mobile devices, Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, reassures passengers that even if they lose their phone, they can request a paper boarding pass at the airport at no cost, provided they checked in online beforehand.
Furthermore, Ryanair ensures that passengers’ details are stored in the system, allowing boarding even without a mobile device. Guidance on the airline’s website confirms that assistance will be provided at the gate for passengers who have checked in online but encounter device issues.
After completing online check-in, travelers can access their Digital Boarding Pass offline within the Ryanair App. However, Ryanair emphasizes the importance of checking in online to avoid the airport check-in fee, which varies depending on the departure location.
Currently, the airport check-in fee stands at £55/€55 per passenger for most flights. Passengers departing from Spain and Austria are subject to different fees. Ryanair advises all passengers to heed email reminders for online check-in to avoid additional charges.
