Shocking video footage capturing the destructive force of a fatal tornado that claimed the life of an elderly British woman has surfaced online.
The video depicts a terrifying tornado ripping through a popular holiday camp in Algarve, Portugal, causing over two dozen injuries.
The 85-year-old victim was staying at the HolaCamp site near Albufeira when the sudden weather phenomenon struck, causing chaos and panic as debris scattered across the area, forcing frightened vacationers to flee for safety.
The footage shows the tornado forming in the distance before barreling through the Portuguese town, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Holidaymakers, including many British tourists, scrambled to escape as the powerful tornado wreaked havoc on the campsite and a nearby hotel, overturning vehicles, demolishing bungalows, and launching debris into the air.
Reports confirmed that 28 individuals sustained injuries, with one person initially reported missing. Tragically, the missing victim was later discovered deceased under the rubble, identified as the British woman, whose identity has not been disclosed.
Portugal’s meteorological agency indicated a high likelihood that the violent weather event was indeed a tornado, as shocking images showcased flattened structures and homes reduced to rubble.
Witnesses at the scene captured the disbelief of onlookers amidst the wreckage, stunned by the scale of devastation left in the tornado’s aftermath.
Officials noted that the extreme wind occurrence struck at 10:07 am and could have been influenced by Storm Claudia, which had battered the UK earlier.
Nineteen individuals suffered injuries at the Eden Hotel, with one in critical condition, while two others were severely hurt at the campsite. The British victim was ultimately found trapped beneath a collapsed bungalow. The injured parties included individuals of Portuguese, British, and Spanish nationalities ranging from six to 86 years old.
Portugal’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed solidarity with the victim’s family in the wake of the deadly storm, while Albufeira mayor Rui Cristina described the scene as truly devastating after inspecting the hardest-hit areas.
Mayor Cristina extended condolences, stating, “There are reports of several injuries and one fatality, an 85-year-old British national. On behalf of myself and the municipality, I offer my deepest condolences.”
