“Beware: Unofficial Chargers Pose Shock and Fire Risks”

An urgent warning has been issued for users of Android and iPhone devices regarding the dangers of using unofficial chargers. With the trend of new devices being sold without chargers, many consumers are turning to cheaper alternatives available online, such as on Amazon, for as little as £8. However, consumer watchdog Which? has conducted tests on various chargers purchased from online platforms like Amazon, AliExpress, eBay, and others, revealing alarming findings. Nine chargers were found to pose the risk of electric shock due to poor manufacturing standards, while eight were identified as potential fire or explosion hazards.

Among the concerning discoveries was a counterfeit charger designed to look like an Apple USB-C 35W Power Adapter, complete with Apple branding on the packaging. Despite its appearance, the product failed safety tests, highlighting the dangers of counterfeit electrical accessories flooding the market.

The investigation also found chargers lacking necessary UK safety markings and devices with hazardous internal circuitry that could lead to overheating, fires, or explosions. This investigation is not the first time Which? has raised concerns about unsafe electrical products being sold online.

Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences of poorly designed electrical products, urging the government to enforce stricter product safety laws for online marketplaces. In response, Amazon assured customers that safety is a top priority and stated that all products on their platform must comply with regulations. B&Q also echoed a commitment to product safety by actively monitoring recalled items on its Marketplace platform.

To ensure consumer safety, experts recommend purchasing chargers from official retailers or reputable brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung, despite the higher cost. Investing in quality chargers from trusted sources is crucial in avoiding the potential safety hazards associated with cheaper alternatives.
