A 32-year-old woman, Sonia Exelby from Portsmouth, Hampshire, tragically lost her life in the US after expressing good health on Facebook just months before. Her body was discovered in a shallow grave in Marion Oaks, Florida, following her failure to return home on October 13.
Authorities have accused Florida resident Dwain Hall of sexually assaulting, torturing, and killing Sonia, who reportedly battled mental health issues. An autopsy confirmed that she passed away from four stab wounds. The investigation linked the two individuals through transactions made with Sonia’s credit cards.
Hall, aged 53, was taken into custody on November 17 and is facing charges including first-degree murder, kidnapping, credit card fraud, and illegal use of a communication device, all of which he denies. Allegedly, Sonia and Hall connected on a fetish website where discussions about her desire to be killed took place. Concerns arose when friends revealed Sonia’s vulnerable state and mental health struggles, highlighting her risky decision to travel to the US.
According to reports, Hall picked Sonia up from the airport and took her to an Airbnb cabin. He initially denied knowing Sonia but later admitted to driving her to the location. Hall’s behavior raised suspicion when he attempted to withdraw money using Sonia’s credit cards and made conflicting statements about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. Surveillance footage indicated Hall purchasing items like gun cleaner, rope, and a shovel before Sonia’s death.
Further investigation showed that Sonia had sent distressing messages to a friend, indicating a dangerous situation she found herself in. Hall allegedly manipulated Sonia, seized her bank account funds, and forced her to record messages and write letters under duress.
After Sonia’s demise, Hall sent a package containing incriminating evidence to an acquaintance in Ohio, where authorities discovered a blade with Sonia’s blood and a shovel with her DNA in Hall’s possession. Hall’s court appearance revealed the mounting evidence against him, leading to a denial of bond by the judge.
