TikTok Influencer Mariam Cisse Abducted and Executed

A TikTok influencer, Mariam Cisse, aged 22 and with a substantial online following, was reportedly abducted by suspected jihadists in Mali’s Timbuktu region. Allegedly taken from a local fair, her captors accused her of collaborating with the Malian army by revealing their movements online.

Mali’s security forces have been engaged in combat with jihadist factions since 2012. Presently, the capital, Bamako, is facing a fuel blockade imposed by insurgents, causing significant disruptions. Following her abduction, Mariam was transported by motorcycle to Independence Square, where, in a tragic turn of events, she was publicly shot in front of a large audience, including her family.

Her brother confirmed that she was detained by jihadists on suspicion of aiding the Malian army.

Reports indicate that Mariam Cisse was executed in Tonky by militants who accused her of filming them for the army. Described as a barbaric act, Mariam often displayed support for the military in her videos, wearing army-style attire and expressing solidarity with the troops combating extremist elements. Her upbeat and genuine videos had endeared her to the community.
