A young woman, aged 19, is facing the frightening prospect of losing her eyesight due to a rare parasite that entered her eye while she was showering with contact lenses. Grace Jamison, who recently recounted her experience on social media, received a diagnosis of acanthamoeba keratitis in August. This condition is caused by tiny amoebas that burrow into the cornea and are commonly found in water sources like lakes, wells, shower water, as well as dust and dirt.
Although anyone can contract this infection, individuals who wear contact lenses are especially vulnerable if proper hygiene practices are not adhered to. Grace shared in a viral TikTok video that she contracted the parasite while showering with her contacts in the Dominican Republic, where the water quality was poor and contained acanthamoeba. She also warned that swimming or sleeping in lenses could lead to the infection.
The treatment for acanthamoeba keratitis is rigorous and painful. Grace now has to apply medicated eye drops every thirty minutes to an hour, some of which contain pool disinfectant and other chemicals to eradicate the parasite. This treatment process is anticipated to last between six months to a year, with additional therapy needed to address the scarring and damage caused by the parasite.
Describing the symptoms as severe, Grace emphasized the excruciating eye and head pain, vision cloudiness, and the risk of blindness associated with acanthamoeba. Despite the difficulties, she is using her ordeal to raise awareness about contact lens safety, urging others to follow simple precautions such as washing hands before handling lenses, regularly changing the cleaning solution, avoiding sleeping, swimming, or showering with lenses on.
Grace aims to highlight how easily vision can be compromised and the importance of appreciating the gift of sight. She stressed the significance of not taking vision for granted and emphasized the necessity of proper eye care practices to prevent similar incidents.
