The latest stage of scratchings for the prestigious Grand National race has seen ten horses removed from contention, leaving a field of 34 competitors preparing for the event at Aintree. Horse racing enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the historic £1 million National, set to take place in less than a month, featuring top staying chasers navigating a challenging course with 30 fences.
Since 2024, the field size for the National has been capped at 34 horses, down from 40. With the recent scratchings, the lineup for the April 11 race is taking shape, as a total of ten horses have been withdrawn at this stage.
Earlier this week, three horses were pulled out, including Grey Dawning, Resplendent Grey, and Gentlemansgame. Subsequently, seven more horses have been removed from the competition, such as Western Fold, Croke Park, Better Days Ahead, Search For Glory, Handstands, Pic Roc, and Leave of Absence.
The final field of 34 contenders includes prominent horses like I Am Maximus and Grangeclare West, trained by Willie Mullins, the 2024 Grand National winner. The potential lineup may still see changes as some horses might opt for the Irish National on April 6 instead.
Among the hopeful entries is the Welsh and Irish National victor Haiti Couleurs, trained by Rebecca Curtis, who is eyeing a strong performance at Aintree following a recent outing at the Gold Cup in Cheltenham. Curtis expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming challenge, emphasizing Haiti Couleurs’ aptitude for National-type races.
As preparations continue, the field remains dynamic, with trainers assessing their horses’ condition and readiness for the demanding Grand National event.
