“Teen Golfer Anna Huang Makes History at CPKC Women’s Open”

Anna Huang’s performance at the CPKC Women’s Open last year marked a significant turning point in her golf journey. At the age of 16, she failed to make the cut in Mississauga, Ontario, which left her feeling uncertain about her career path. Huang admitted, “I was struggling with my game at that time. I had missed several cuts consecutively.”

While her compatriot Brooke Henderson triumphed in the tournament, Huang dedicated her time to refining her putting skills with her caddie and coach, Sean Burke, after missing the cut. Reflecting on the experience, Huang shared, “Sean devoted the weekend to focusing on my putting techniques and aspects like speed and alignment, which greatly benefited me in subsequent events.”

Following her intensive practice sessions in Mississauga, Huang went on to clinch consecutive victories on the Ladies European Tour within a month. Her success continued as she secured another win in Morocco in May, but it was her remarkable triumph at the PIF London Championship on August 9 that captured the attention of the women’s golf community.

At just 17 years, 9 months, and 10 days old, Huang made history by becoming the youngest player to claim four LET titles, surpassing the previous record set by Lydia Ko of New Zealand at the age of 18.

Returning to the CPKC Women’s Open this year, Huang expressed a newfound confidence in her abilities, stating, “Last year, I was a rookie without any wins. Now, with more experience from playing six majors and numerous LPGA events, I feel much more prepared and capable.”

The prestigious $2.75 million CPKC Women’s Open is set to commence in Edmonton at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club, where Ko secured victory as an amateur in 2013. Huang is part of a rising cohort of young Canadian golf talents, including Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, who impressed as the low amateur in last year’s Mississauga event.

Deng’s achievements, along with Huang’s, have garnered attention and admiration, with both talented golfers receiving sponsor exemptions for the CPKC Women’s Open. The emergence of these exceptional young players has sparked curiosity and acclaim within the golfing community, with Golf Canada’s NextGen coach Jeff MacDonald acknowledging the unprecedented success of the Canadian contingent.

Additionally, the tournament will feature renowned LPGA Tour players such as defending champion Brooke Henderson, Maude-Aimee Leblanc, and Savannah Grewal, alongside promising young amateurs and seasoned professionals.

Huang’s journey to professional golf began early, as she opted to pursue the European tour due to the age restrictions imposed by the LPGA. Despite initial challenges and doubts about her decision, she persevered and eventually found success both on and off the course, culminating in her first tour win.

As she prepares to compete in Edmonton, Huang will be supported by her father, Alex, who has been her caddie for her previous LET victories. Following her recent triumph in London, Huang was pleasantly surprised by the recognition she received from fans at a local club in Alberta, emphasizing the positive impact of their support on her journey.
