As their 11-year-old son prepares to enter secondary school this September, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide him with a phone. However, before doing so, the couple understood the importance of communicating with each other and their son.
Giovanna, aged 40, expressed concerns about the accessibility of content on smartphones and emphasized the need for parents to actively manage and ensure the safety of their children online. She highlighted the prevalence of inappropriate content and mental health issues among children, underscoring the necessity for open conversations between parents and children to empower them.
Many families have gifted smartphones to children during the Christmas season, leading to a surge in discussions around the challenges and benefits associated with these devices. In the upcoming year, a campaign called The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, aims to encourage families to engage in conversations about online device usage, regardless of their children’s ages.
Giovanna shared her enthusiasm for participating in the campaign, acknowledging the opportunity to enhance her knowledge and support her family. She emphasized the pressure parents often feel to have all the answers, but highlighted the resources and online hub provided by Tesco Mobile as valuable tools for navigating online safety.
Giovanna and her husband, Tom, who is a member of the band McFly and a children’s author, have two other sons aged seven and nine. These children use tablets to communicate with family members, play online games, and engage in video calls. The couple implemented restrictions on the eldest son’s smartphone, limiting internet access and linking it to Tom’s phone for content control.
Giovanna stressed the importance of maintaining an open dialogue with children about the reasons behind setting up restrictions. She noted the significance of setting boundaries, such as no phones in the bedroom or during meal times, to promote healthy device usage habits.
In addition, she emphasized the gradual introduction of internet access to children, allowing them to explore the online world at a pace that aligns with their readiness. Finally, Giovanna provided tips to help children stay safe online, including setting up child accounts, ensuring correct age information, activating safety filters, using parental controls, and maintaining ongoing conversations about online safety and smartphone usage.
