Guide’s Heroic Effort Fails: Woman Killed by Lion

A courageous guide made extraordinary efforts to rescue Katherine Chappell, a woman tragically killed by a lion while attempting to take a photo during a safari near Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2015. Katherine, a visual effects editor for the popular TV series Game of Thrones, was attacked by the lion when she lowered her car window to capture an image of the animal. Witness Ben Govender described how the guide, Pierre Potgieter, bravely intervened by hitting the lion, but the attack was fatal.

Despite the guide’s intervention, the lion launched a second attack that resulted in Katherine’s tragic death. The guide, Pierre, suffered a heart attack during the distressing incident. The Lion Park staff tried to chase the lion away, but Katherine succumbed to her injuries before help could arrive.

The Lion Park had experienced several attacks in recent months, prompting warnings about safety measures. Animal expert Kevin Richardson emphasized the importance of following rules in such environments to avoid incidents where lions lose their natural fear of humans.

Katherine, a New Yorker living in Canada, was remembered for her talents and adventurous spirit. Her family and friends paid tribute to her loving nature and passion for life. Katherine had a deep love for animals and was on a volunteer mission to protect wildlife in South Africa.

Her sister, Jennifer Ringwald, eulogized Katherine as a fearless and passionate individual, highlighting her dedication to conservation efforts. Katherine’s commitment to wildlife conservation was evident through her fundraising activities for endangered species.
