“Nova Scotia Writer Donates $300K to Save Library Branches”

Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has generously contributed $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library to prevent the closure of five branches. Reid expressed her motivation in an interview with CBC News, emphasizing the importance of utilizing success for the greater good.

Earlier, the library made use of $80,000 from its reserve funds to extend operations until September 30 for the branches in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton. Although some funding was secured from municipalities, an additional $200,000 was required to sustain operations until the 2026-27 fiscal year.

In a statement to Radio-Canada, library CEO Julia Merritt confirmed that Reid’s generous donation ensures the continued functioning of the five branches until the end of the specified fiscal year. The funding will primarily cover staffing costs for these branches, as mentioned by Merritt in a press release applauding Reid’s significant contribution.

Highlighting the impact of libraries on her journey as an author, Reid stressed the necessity of adequate funding for these essential services. She reminisced about the influence of libraries on her writing career and the valuable role they play in communities beyond providing books and resources.

While acknowledging the importance of private donations, Reid emphasized the irreplaceable role of government funding in sustaining public libraries. Merritt echoed the sentiment, advocating for a revised funding formula to ensure the long-term viability of libraries in Nova Scotia.

Responding to Reid’s donation, Nova Scotia’s Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the province’s commitment to public libraries despite financial challenges. The department highlighted its annual operating support for libraries and additional funds allocated to support library services.

Looking ahead, Reid will participate in a special public event celebrating libraries and community engagement, with more details to be announced soon. The library remains dedicated to collaborating with the government to ensure continued access to robust public library services across the region.
