A new device, the Manhattan S4-R set-top box, is gaining popularity at Argos as a Sky Q-style upgrade option without monthly fees. This device offers similar features to Sky’s premium service, allowing users to record programs, pause live TV, and store content on its built-in hard drive. The key advantage is that unlike Sky Q, there are no ongoing monthly fees associated with the Manhattan S4-R. By utilizing Freesat, the device provides access to over 100 channels without any additional costs after purchase. It utilizes an existing satellite dish to deliver free TV channels directly to the television, including popular channels like BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, and more.
The Manhattan S4-R boasts a user-friendly interface, built-in search functionalities, and access to a vast library of on-demand entertainment, totaling over 60,000 hours. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5. While it may not offer premium sports and movie packages like Sky Q, Freesat stands out for its free-to-watch model. The 500GB model of the Manhattan S4-R is currently available for £219.99 at retailers like Argos and Amazon, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions expected to launch soon. The device is in high demand, according to Argos, and is selling quickly.
Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, highlighted that the S4-R enhances recording capabilities by enabling up to four simultaneous recordings, positioning it as an attractive alternative for households seeking an affordable and flexible TV service. Another disruptive device in the market is the Pleio puck, offering access to over 50 live channels via the internet, bypassing traditional broadcast methods. After initial stock shortages, the Pleio puck is now back on sale for £99.99, including a gaming controller and access to over 200 online games.
Sky has announced a 20 percent price reduction for the Sky Glass Air TV in anticipation of the upcoming World Cup, with prices starting from £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the advanced Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, can expect prices starting from £11 per month.
