Shoppers were left saddened by the closure announcement of a long-standing family-owned art and stationery store. Clarkes of Sussex made the decision to permanently shut down its Burgess Hill store in West Sussex after more than 40 years in operation. The store is set to close in April, with the exact closing date yet to be disclosed, prompting emotional responses from loyal customers.
Expressing their disappointment, customers shared fond memories of the store. One shopper mentioned, “You will be greatly missed. Visiting your shop has always been a delight.” Another commented, “This news is truly disheartening.” A third customer conveyed, “I have been a patron of your store for numerous years, and your service has always been exceptional.” Additionally, a fourth customer remarked, “It is saddening to hear about this closure – your store and staff have been wonderful.”
Last year, Clarkes of Sussex closed its Brighton branch after 25 years of service, while it continues to operate other stores throughout Sussex, including one in Haywards Heath. Another store under different ownership, Clarkes in Lewes, is also scheduled to close in March.
The owner of Clarkes of Sussex, Jay Patel, shared a heartfelt message regarding the closure on social media. Patel reflected on the store’s long history in the community, expressing gratitude for the support received over the years. Despite the closure, Patel cherished the relationships formed with customers and the memories created during the store’s operations.
As the chapter of Clarkes comes to a close, Patel expressed deep appreciation for the community’s support and involvement in his journey. He extended well wishes for happiness, good health, and success to all customers in the future. The store’s closure marks the end of an era, yet the lasting connections and friendships forged will always be cherished.
