A man consumed Jägerbombs before fatally striking his girlfriend’s brother in a Liverpool neighborhood, shortly after meeting him for the first time, according to court proceedings. Stephen Bates, 42, residing on Herondale Road in Mossley Hill, is currently standing trial at Liverpool Crown Court for the alleged murder of Martin O’Donovan, 47, outside his sister’s residence on Stonyhurst Road in Woolton during their mother’s 70th birthday celebration in April.
The pair had only encountered each other earlier that day when Bates purportedly engaged in an inebriated altercation and made threats to harm Martin. Following his departure from the party, Bates reportedly returned in his Ford Fiesta and intentionally aimed his vehicle at Martin, causing severe head injuries as he became trapped beneath the car.
Bates confessed to law enforcement officers on the scene, acknowledging his mistake by stating, “I know what I’ve done, I’ve f***ed up.” Jurors were presented with a recorded interview of Susanne Lewzey, Bates’ then-girlfriend and Martin’s sister, conducted by detectives the subsequent day, as reported by Liverpool Echo.
Lewzey recounted the events of the gathering, mentioning the initial convivial atmosphere between her brother and boyfriend. However, as the evening progressed, Bates’s intoxication escalated, leading to disruptive behavior. Despite Lewzey’s attempts to calm him down, Bates insisted on leaving and ultimately resorted to getting behind the wheel of his car.
The situation escalated further as Bates directed Martin’s wife to a nearby street before driving off without her. Subsequently, the fatal incident occurred as Martin attempted to evade Bates’ vehicle, resulting in a tragic outcome. The trial, overseen by Judge Neil Flewitt KC, is ongoing, with Bates denying the murder charge but admitting to manslaughter.
