“Greggs Considers Vending Machines for Pastries”

Greggs enthusiasts may soon have the option to buy sausage rolls and other pastry treats from a vending machine. The bakery chain is considering introducing “unattended retail solutions,” as stated by Richard Hutton, Greggs’ chief financial officer. These solutions may involve both automated and manual vending options.

While no specific launch date or locations have been disclosed yet, this development follows the successful introduction of three smaller Greggs Bitesize shops. Greggs recently reported a 17.9% decrease in statutory pre-tax profits to £167.4 million for the year ending December 27, as compared to the previous year.

The decline in profits is partly attributed to challenging market conditions and unusually hot weather. In 2025, Greggs saw a net increase of 121 stores, bringing its total to 2,739 locations. The company aims to open approximately 120 more stores this year, with long-term plans to exceed 3,000 shops in the UK.

Greggs’ Roisin Currie expressed optimism that easing inflation will lead to increased consumer spending in the coming months. However, she acknowledged the ongoing challenges consumers face and emphasized the company’s readiness for another demanding year ahead.

Despite recently raising the price of a sausage roll to £1.35 in most outlets, Greggs assured customers that there are no further price hikes planned for the year. The company also shared the success of The Golden Flake Tavern, its first pub offering beer, located in Newcastle’s Fenwick department store. The pub has attracted over 20,000 customers, with the Sausage Roll & Mash dish proving to be the most popular choice.
