“Identity Crisis: Families in Nova Scotia Face Ashes Uncertainty”

In Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, some families are facing uncertainty as it has come to light that the ashes they believed to be those of their loved ones may not be accurate. Despite the potential use of DNA testing for identification, experts caution that the process offers only a slim chance of confirming the remains.

Following revelations by the new owners of the former Serenity Funeral Home that ashes of deceased individuals were discovered in storage, numerous families, including Michelle Carey’s, are now questioning the authenticity of the remains they laid to rest. Carey, who utilized Serenity’s services for her father’s funeral in 2018, expressed skepticism about the possibility of ever definitively confirming the identity of the remains.

Dean Hildebrand, overseeing the forensic DNA laboratory at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, highlighted the difficulty in extracting sufficient DNA from ashes for identification purposes. While trace amounts of DNA can sometimes be found, the practicality of utilizing such DNA remains a challenge.

Despite the resilience of DNA in the face of various challenges, including fires that damage human remains, the extreme conditions of a crematorium can lead to the complete breakdown of all organic matter. Hildebrand acknowledged the complexities involved in identifying remains from mixed-up ashes, noting the significant number of remains in question at Serenity Funeral Home.

While acknowledging the low odds, Hildebrand emphasized the importance of conducting tests to explore any potential avenues for identification, such as extracting DNA from fragments of bone. Carey revealed that the family was informed about the possibility of a small metal disc with an ID number on the buried ashes, offering a potential lead for identification.

As investigations by the province and Nova Scotia’s funeral directors’ regulator are ongoing, the families affected await further clarity on the unsettling situation. Despite the challenges posed by the circumstances, efforts continue to determine the true identities of the remains laid to rest.
