The stewards in Formula 1 have disclosed the reasons behind penalizing Lewis Hamilton in the Mexico City Grand Prix. Hamilton came under scrutiny for veering off the track while dueling with Max Verstappen, prompting Verstappen to call for repercussions.
Initially, Hamilton was investigated for not utilizing the designated escape route as instructed by the race director but was cleared. The stewards explained that Hamilton’s excessive speed prevented him from using the specified escape road, leading to no further action being taken.
However, the stewards found that Hamilton gained an unfair advantage by leaving the track, resulting in a 10-second time penalty. This penalty caused Hamilton to drop to eighth place after serving it during his first pit stop, allowing multiple cars to overtake him.
Despite Hamilton’s frustration over the penalty, he acknowledged the challenge of the situation and accepted the outcome. He expressed disappointment about the race’s result but recognized the nature of motor racing.
