“Families Navigate AI Challenges: The Family Chat Initiative”

AI is increasingly shaping our daily lives, posing challenges for parents trying to keep up with the rapid changes. Families are now tasked with guiding their children through a digital landscape saturated with AI, influencing everything from social media to schoolwork and relationships, as underscored by the recent Safer Internet Day.

In light of this, for 2026, we have teamed up with Tesco Mobile, a sponsor of Safer Internet Day, to advocate for families engaging in open dialogues, known as The Family Chat, about smartphones and fostering candid discussions at home regarding online safety to alleviate the perceived complexity.

Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys aged seven, nine, and 11, alongside her husband Tom, will engage with parents and children to address the challenges they face.

The first conversation will center on AI and how Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub serves as a valuable tool to assist parents with children up to 18 years old. The Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua, 13, Isaac, 14, and Ruby, 17, rely on digital devices to stay connected. However, they admit to struggling with understanding AI, which can hinder their ability to ensure safety.

Anna candidly admitted, “I’m not adept at identifying AI. I’ve seen images and thought they were real, only for my kids to point out, ‘That’s AI, Mom!'” The family acknowledges the challenges of discerning authentic content, particularly on platforms like TikTok where AI-generated content appears strikingly realistic.

As online homework becomes the norm, often involving AI-generated research, the Karleys and Giovanna are grappling with this new reality. Giovanna noted, “With my eldest in secondary school, I’ve observed that homework is predominantly computer-based. As parents, it’s crucial to evaluate how we utilize AI for homework and constantly assess if it’s the most effective approach.”

Here are some tips to help guide your children in safely navigating AI:

1. **Explore AI Together**: Collaborate as a family to experiment with AI through creative endeavors, fostering a safer and enjoyable experience.

2. **AI Isn’t Always Right**: Teach kids to fact-check AI responses and question the sources of information.

3. **Check Age Limits & Privacy**: Verify age restrictions on AI tools (usually 13+) and review privacy settings on trusted platforms together for a secure online experience.

4. **Talk About What’s Real**: Discuss with children the importance of verifying information online to distinguish between authentic content and misinformation.

5. **Use AI as a Support, Not a Shortcut**: Encourage children to leverage AI for inspiration while emphasizing the significance of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Embracing these insights, the Karleys appreciate having a reliable resource for guidance. Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub offers straightforward resources and toolkits to aid parents in discussing AI with their children, including age-specific advice on promoting safe AI use, developed in partnership with the UK Safer Internet Centre. The hub also provides links to engaging educational AI quizzes from the UK Safer Internet Centre to involve the entire family in conversations about online safety.

While the Karley family already prioritizes discussions on staying safe online, they find Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub to be a valuable asset, making it easier for them to deepen their understanding and enhance their support for their children. “Now we can explore it together, learn more, and improve our support,” shared Emmanuel.
