“From Taliban Rule to Canadian Dreams: Afghan Refugee’s Inspiring Journey”

Five years have passed since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan following the government’s collapse in August 2021. In the aftermath, Canada has welcomed over 60,000 Afghan refugees.

Among them is Farkhunda Hashimy, who has found solace in her new life in Saskatoon since arriving with her family in 2023. Originally a high school student in Kabul before the Taliban regime, Hashimy reminisced about the freedoms she once had in Afghanistan, including the right to education and pursuing a career.

Life drastically changed for Hashimy and many others after the Taliban’s ascension. Restrictions imposed by the Taliban have severely hampered women’s rights, with decrees affecting the daily lives of women and girls. The once vibrant landscape of women in higher education and prominent roles in society has been replaced with stringent limitations, including a ban on girls progressing beyond Grade 6 in education.

Natasha Arnpriester, a senior legal counsel at the Open Society Justice Initiative, is spearheading a case against the Taliban at the International Court of Justice, highlighting the regressive policies impacting women’s rights in Afghanistan.

Hashimy, who once aspired to attend university and become an athlete, saw her dreams shattered by the regime’s restrictions. The stark contrast between pre and post-Taliban Afghanistan is evident, with women now facing severe constraints on education, employment, and even basic freedoms like speaking in public.

Escaping the oppressive regime, Hashimy and her family sought refuge in Canada through the assistance of the 30 Birds Foundation, dedicated to aiding Afghan women and girls in peril. The foundation facilitated their relocation to Saskatoon, where Hashimy now studies urban planning at the University of Saskatchewan.

Despite embracing her new life, Hashimy remains deeply connected to the plight of women in Afghanistan, vowing to advocate for their rights. She expressed gratitude towards Canada for providing a safe haven where she can pursue her aspirations and contribute to societal development.

The journey of Afghan refugees like Hashimy reflects the enduring hope for a brighter future, even as their hearts and thoughts remain intertwined with those still facing oppression under Taliban rule.
