“Families Encouraged to Have ‘The Family Chat’ About Kids’ Phone Usage”

As their 11-year-old son prepares to enter secondary school this September, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher felt it was time to provide him with a cellphone. Recognizing the importance of communication within the family, they emphasized the need for discussions around managing phone usage and ensuring safety.

Giovanna, aged 40, expressed concerns about children being exposed to inappropriate content and highlighted the significance of empowering children through open dialogues with parents. In light of the increasing number of children receiving smartphones as gifts, families are navigating the challenges and benefits associated with this technology.

In collaboration with Tesco Mobile, a campaign called “The Family Chat” has been launched to encourage families to engage in conversations about online devices, regardless of their children’s age. The campaign aims to promote awareness of resources such as Tesco Mobile’s age-specific toolkits and support services for parents and children.

Giovanna, along with her husband Tom, who is a member of the band McFly and a children’s author, have two younger sons aged seven and nine. These children use tablets to communicate with family members, play online games, and engage in video calls. The couple ensured that their eldest son, who now attends high school, had a restricted smartphone to maintain communication without excessive internet access.

Emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries, Giovanna mentioned the family’s practice of limiting phone usage in certain settings and promoting face-to-face interactions. She highlighted the gradual approach they take in introducing technology to their children based on readiness and the importance of explaining the reasoning behind restrictions.

Recognizing the potential risks of excessive screen time, Giovanna stressed the need for balance and mindful usage of devices within the family. She shared practical tips for parents to ensure their children’s online safety, including setting up child accounts, verifying age settings, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and fostering ongoing conversations about online habits.

Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safe setup of new devices to protect children from online harm amidst the excitement of receiving technology gifts.
