A woman shared her harrowing experience of being defrauded of £400 after selling her phone on the Facebook Marketplace. The scam unfolded when Danielle Pickett, residing in Oldham, handed over the phone to a man on an e-scooter who arrived to collect it. Initially, the man presented what appeared to be legitimate proof of the funds being transferred to her.
Despite the seemingly genuine transaction, the money did not reflect in Danielle’s account the next day. When she reached out to the buyer, who went by the name Megan, expressing her concerns, reassurances were given that the issue would be resolved promptly. However, as both the buyer and the money remained elusive, tensions escalated.
Threatening messages ensued, with the buyer warning Danielle that he knew her address and could make her life miserable. Undeterred, Danielle took matters into her own hands by sharing CCTV footage of the man at her residence and the suspected fake bank transfer confirmation on social media. This action led to other women coming forward, claiming similar encounters with the same individual in the Chadderton area.
In her conversation with the Manchester Evening News, Danielle recounted the events, detailing how the buyer, posing as a woman online, had orchestrated the exchange. Despite initial assurances, doubts began to surface as the promised payment failed to materialize, prompting Danielle to suspect foul play.
Danielle’s efforts to seek redress were met with further evasion and intimidation from the buyer, culminating in unsettling threats. Feeling vulnerable and violated, Danielle decided to involve the authorities, expressing her resolve to uncover the identity of the perpetrator.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed receipt of Danielle’s complaint and assured that an investigation was underway. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, emphasized the implementation of anti-scam measures on the platform, such as verification checkpoints and message filtering, to safeguard users.
In light of this incident, Facebook advises users to exercise caution by scrutinizing profiles for authenticity, checking seller reviews, and opting for secure payment methods like PayPal. Vigilance and prudence are paramount in safeguarding against online scams and fraudulent activities.
