“Canadian Astronaut Joshua Kutryk Set for Historic ISS Mission”

Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk is set to embark on a historic mission to the International Space Station (ISS) for approximately six months. Kutryk, a skilled engineer, fighter pilot, and test pilot from Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., was selected by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in 2017.

Originally scheduled to launch on Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner, Kutryk will now ride on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon following setbacks with Boeing’s missions. The launch, initially planned for September 12, was postponed to October 1 due to spacecraft issues. Kutryk expressed confidence in the readiness of the vehicle for the journey.

During his time in space, Kutryk plans to bring various items from Canadian organizations and universities, including multiple Canadian flags. One significant item is an old pocket watch that holds sentimental value, having traveled from Ukraine to Canada with his family. Despite the watch already reaching the ISS on an earlier supply launch, Kutryk finds its presence in space symbolic of the world’s transformative nature through exploration.

Looking ahead to his time on the ISS, Kutryk eagerly anticipates gazing out of the space station’s windows at Earth. The upcoming Crew 13 mission, which includes NASA astronauts Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney, along with Russian cosmonaut Sergey Teteriatnikov, will conduct experiments, including Canadian-led initiatives.

Reflecting on the mission’s significance, Kutryk highlighted how space exploration unites nations, offering a perspective beyond earthly challenges and divisions. Amid global turbulence, he emphasized the collaborative spirit among countries like the United States, Canada, and Russia in shaping a hopeful future beyond the confines of our planet.
