Barry Hearn criticized Conor Benn for his departure from Matchroom to Zuffa Boxing, labeling the move as “classless” for not engaging with Eddie Hearn. The 29-year-old officially severed ties on Friday to be managed by the Saudi-backed promoter led by UFC president Dana White.
Benn chose to leave the promoters who had supported him for a decade, even during a previous drug test failure. Despite Eddie Hearn’s praise following Benn’s victory over Chris Eubank Jnr, Benn opted for Zuffa, citing an irresistible opportunity that Eddie Hearn tried to discuss in vain.
Expressing disappointment, Hearn mentioned being let down by Benn’s decision and emphasized the importance of loyalty to the team that had nurtured him. Benn’s move follows cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia’s signing with Zuffa, shifting away from Eddie Hearn’s guidance.
Barry Hearn revealed that Benn avoided a face-to-face discussion proposed by Eddie, opting for legal channels instead, marking the situation as one of the most unpleasant in his long career. Benn defended his choice, highlighting the financial attractiveness of the offer.
Hearn Sr. emphasized that while Benn’s decision was respected, the manner in which it was executed lacked professionalism. Highlighting the need for reciprocity in standards, Hearn expressed disappointment with the handling of the situation.
