A 13-year-old girl sought help from the authorities due to recurring nightmares involving the ghost of a headless woman. Unknown to the police initially, this led to a disturbing investigation. The teenager, identified as Ah Fong, had been lured by a dangerous gang and disclosed witnessing and participating in the brutal torture of a young woman.
Upon reaching the location where the horrific acts occurred, officers were immediately struck by a foul odor of decaying flesh. They then uncovered the dismembered body of Fan Man-yee, a 23-year-old nightclub hostess who was kidnapped by a triad member over a debt. Fan’s remains were found in bags scattered around a flat in Hong Kong’s Kowloon district, an area known for triad gang activities.
Subsequent searches of the Granville Road apartment revealed more body parts, with Fan’s skull concealed inside a Hello Kitty mermaid plushie. The investigation pieced together the atrocities inflicted on Fan by gangsters Chan Man-lok, Leung Shing-cho, and Leung Wai-lun, detailing the torture and abuse she endured.
The perpetrators, while admitting to obstructing a proper burial, denied the murder charges, deflecting blame during the trial. Despite the heinous acts inflicted on Fan, the lack of conclusive evidence led to a manslaughter conviction for the trio. They were sentenced to life imprisonment for their extreme cruelty and violence.
The dark legacy of the ‘Hello Kitty murder’ lingered in the neighborhood long after the crime, prompting residents to evacuate the haunted building where Fan was killed. In 2012, the structure was demolished, but the memory of this horrific incident continues to haunt the collective consciousness of Hong Kong residents.
