A global coalition of soccer fan organizations initiated a petition on Thursday demanding the resignation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino over his proposal to sell future World Cup profits to private investors. The petition, featuring the hashtag InfantinOut, also advocates for a reconstruction of FIFA to prevent similar controversies in the future.
The petition condemns Infantino for his failed attempt to commercialize the World Cup, labeling it as a betrayal that tarnishes the sport. Notably, the petition highlights the withdrawal of Infantino’s plan following widespread outrage from the soccer community.
Among the signatories are various fan groups such as Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, and the Independent Supporters Council in North America, alongside approximately 40 national fan associations globally.
Despite facing opposition from UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation, Infantino has refused to step down. The petition denounces his leadership as a severe failure incompatible with democratic principles, citing concerns about centralized power, lack of transparency, and accountability within FIFA.
The petition concludes by urging Infantino to resign for the credibility of FIFA and the integrity of the sport. It also highlights Infantino’s controversial history, including his involvement in contentious projects like the European Super League and advocating for biennial World Cup tournaments.
