“Millions to Revitalize Playgrounds in Neglected Areas”

Rachel Reeves plans to invest millions of pounds in playgrounds during the upcoming budget announcement. The Chancellor is expected to allocate £18 million to revitalize 200 children’s play areas that have been neglected, with a focus on the most disadvantaged communities. The funding aims to rejuvenate play spaces across England, providing safe and engaging environments for children to play and thrive.

Recent findings from the Raising the National Play Commission revealed a concerning trend of playground closures, with at least 400 playgrounds shutting down in England between 2012 and 2022. The report emphasized the importance of outdoor play and highlighted the lack of maintenance leading to disrepair in many existing playgrounds, leaving two million children without easy access to such facilities.

Eugene Minogue, Executive Director of Play England, welcomed the funding for playgrounds as a positive step forward, signaling a renewed government focus on play provisions. He emphasized the disparities in playground access, particularly in deprived areas, stressing the crucial role of play in children’s development. Minogue suggested that alongside a new national play strategy, this investment could initiate long-term positive changes for children, families, and communities across England.

Labour MP Tom Hayes, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Play, highlighted the significance of the government’s renewed attention to playgrounds, noting that prior to this year, playgrounds had not been a topic of parliamentary debate for eight years. Hayes expressed the importance of providing safe and inclusive play spaces for all children, stating that investing in playgrounds is an investment in stronger and more vibrant communities.
