Dozens Sickened by Food Poisoning at Welsh Pub

Numerous families have reported suffering from severe food poisoning symptoms after consuming a Sunday lunch at a well-known pub. Customers dining at The Cwrt Henllys Bar and Restaurant in Cwmbran, South Wales, fell ill shortly after partaking in the roast dinner service on October 5.

One expectant mother shared her distressing experience of waking up in the middle of the night feeling extremely unwell, with intense stomach cramps that led her to fear she was experiencing a miscarriage.

Health officials have confirmed that tests conducted on samples from 19 affected individuals revealed the presence of clostridium perfringens, a harmful organism known to cause severe food poisoning.

A particular family recounted that out of their group of 13 individuals, eight fell ill on the mentioned day, with even their pet dog becoming sick after consuming the leftovers from the meal.

A spokesperson from Torfaen Council stated that investigations by the Public Protection Service revealed the source of the illnesses to be attributed to clostridium perfringens contamination, specifically from the food served at Cwrt Henllys Hotel. No additional cases of illness related to dining at the establishment have been reported after October 5, 2025, indicating no broader public health threat.

Clostridium perfringens, a bacteria commonly found in animals and the environment, is typically contracted by humans through the consumption of contaminated meat or poultry left unrefrigerated for extended periods, as highlighted by the Food Standards Agency.

The agency further warns that outbreaks of C. perfringens food poisoning often occur in environments serving large groups of people, where maintaining safe food temperatures can be challenging, such as during batch cooking at home. Vulnerable individuals, including young children, pregnant women, those with underlying health conditions, and the elderly, are at higher risk of experiencing severe symptoms.

The Mirror has reached out to the Cwrt Henllys Bar and Restaurant for their response to these incidents.
