A teenager, aged 17, who was kidnapped and dismembered, left a haunting final message for his mother before his tragic death in a brutal gang-related incident. The violent murder of Keane Mulready-Woods in 2020 deeply shocked Ireland and had a profound impact on the nation. Engulfed in a drug feud in Drogheda, the young man was enticed to a residence on January 12, where he endured torture and decapitation. Subsequently, his body parts were discarded from a vehicle in a sports bag onto a sidewalk in Moatview. His head, hands, and feet were later discovered in a burnt-out car in Dublin several days after the initial incident. The brutal killing of Keane set off a series of retaliatory attacks, culminating in the assassination of the main suspect, Robbie Lawlor, who was shot dead while attempting to collect a drug debt.
Before his disappearance, Keane contacted his mother, informing her that he would return home late and requesting that she leave money out for a taxi. The Irish Independent reported that Keane, who had been recruited as a drug courier for a local gang, was under a curfew to be home before nightfall and had been compliant with the rules.
At the time of his demise, Keane was on parole after being convicted of intimidating a local mother regarding drug debts owed by her child to the gang. Lawlor allegedly murdered Keane under the belief that the teenager was implicated in the killing of Lawlor’s brother-in-law, Richie Carberry, at his residence in November 2019.
Authorities suspect Lawlor proceeded to torment the teenager, despite initially planning to give him a “punishment beating” for a minor drug debt. A source revealed to the Irish Sun that Lawlor had an intense fixation on Mulready-Woods and was resolute on ending his life as he was convinced of the teenager’s involvement in Carberry’s demise. Lawlor, a 36-year-old with a history tied to multiple homicides and numerous criminal convictions, escalated his violence by dismembering the teenager’s remains and bragging about it to his adversaries. Despite being acquitted of attempted murder charges in court, Lawlor faced retribution as he was assaulted outside a gym by an individual connected to one of his alleged murder victims. Lawlor’s gym bag was stolen, and his foes shared photos of themselves wearing his flip-flops. It is widely speculated that Keane was present during the attack, leading Lawlor to seek vengeance. One of the images circulated post-Keane’s death featured a disturbing caption: “Won’t be robbing a man’s flip-flops again.”
In February 2023, local criminal Paul Crosby was sentenced to a decade in prison for aiding in the murder of Keane, while his accomplice Gerard “Rocky” Cruise received a seven-year prison term. Another individual, Gerard ‘Ged’ McKenna, pleaded guilty to cleaning up and erasing evidence from the crime scene.
During a victim impact statement delivered on behalf of Keane’s devastated mother Elizabeth, she expressed the profound anguish caused by her son’s cruel and inhumane death, lamenting the loss of her child and the enduring nightmares that haunt her. She shared her inability to protect him in the face of such barbarity.
