A man was convicted of the murder of a hotel worker at a train station platform. Deng Chol Majek, a Sudanese asylum seeker claiming to be 19 years old, was accused of fatally stabbing Ms. Whyte, a 27-year-old, with 23 head wounds in a tragic incident on October 20 last year. The attack occurred as Ms. Whyte was waiting for a train home after her shift, with CCTV footage presented during the trial showing Majek’s deliberate interaction with her at the hotel entrance and subsequent movements at the station.
Following the incident, Majek was observed engaging in leisurely activities with friends near the hotel, showcasing behavior described by a housing officer as notably different and cheerful compared to before. Despite denying charges of murder, possession of a screwdriver, and being present at the crime scene, Majek’s testimony during the trial was interpreted through a Sudanese Arabic translator. He attributed discrepancies in his age records to an error in official documents, clarifying that he departed Sudan at 16 years old.
In a statement, Senior Investigator DCI Paul Attwell condemned the brutal and senseless attack on Ms. Whyte, emphasizing the lack of remorse displayed by Majek throughout the investigation and trial. He acknowledged the immense suffering endured by the victim’s family and commended their resilience during the challenging legal proceedings. The statement concluded with a call to honor Ms. Whyte’s memory and legacy, urging remembrance of her life rather than focusing on the perpetrator.
