Shabana Mahmood has firmly rejected Nigel Farage’s insinuation that she is vying for a position within Reform UK through her proposed changes to the asylum system.
The Home Secretary responded to Farage’s comments by defending her stance against the Labour Party’s alleged alignment with Reform UK, which currently leads in the polls. Mahmood faced backlash for unveiling stringent measures, including the directive to proceed with deporting families, including children.
In response to Farage’s suggestion that she might find a place in Reform UK due to her controversial plans, Mahmood bluntly stated, “Nigel Farage can sod off. I’m not interested in anything he’s got to say.” She emphasized her focus on addressing the broken asylum system as her primary duty, aiming to mend the system, alleviate public anger, and promote unity.
Farage welcomed Mahmood’s strong language, interpreting it as a potential audition for joining Reform. However, he expressed skepticism about her ability to garner support from her own party members and navigate the challenges posed by European human rights laws.
Farage further speculated that Mahmood’s proposals stemmed from the Government’s apprehension about losing votes to Reform, hinting at a possible defection to his party. Despite the criticisms, Mahmood remains resolute in her commitment to reforming the asylum system for the betterment of the country.
Critics, including Labour peer Lord Alf Dubs and Enver Solomon from Refugee Council, have condemned Mahmood’s stringent measures, citing concerns about the impact on vulnerable asylum seekers and the inefficacy of the proposed reforms.
