McDonald’s enthusiasts are expressing discontent following a viral social media post that unveiled a nearly £2 price tag for a hash brown at select restaurants.
The post featured an image of a McDonald’s menu board displaying the £1.99 cost for a hash brown at a specific location. It has garnered over 459,000 views and was captioned with, “£2 for one hash brown. We are officially finished.”
Several reactions poured in, with one person remarking on the escalating prices, another suggesting opting for a sausage sandwich at that rate, and a third simply labeling it as “madness.”
Another commenter praised the hash browns as a favorite but deemed £2 as excessive, reminiscing about the earlier price of 59p.
A McDonald’s spokesperson clarified that franchisees have the liberty to set prices at the majority of their outlets, emphasizing their shared goal of delivering a top-notch dining experience and value for customers.
This development follows McDonald’s announcement to raise the redemption points required for free items via MyMcDonald’s Rewards. The current 5,500 points needed for items like a Big Mac will increase to 6,500 points starting March 17, with customers earning 100 points per £1 spent.
The required points for specific items will also increase, for instance, from 1,500 to 2,000 for a Medium Coffee or Small Fries, and from 2,500 to 3,500 for a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie.
A McDonald’s representative attributed the loyalty scheme adjustments to the mounting costs of food and supplies, noting the introduction of new redemption options like Chicken Selects and Cheese sides to enhance customer choice.
