A court has revealed that a woman who was fatally shot on a Welsh housing estate was mistakenly targeted due to a dispute between rival drug factions. Joanne Penney, 40, was visiting a friend’s residence when she was shot by a gunman at the entrance. It is believed that the intended victim was actually the woman Joanne was staying with, as she was the one who opened the door to the attacker.
The tragic incident occurred on March 9 this year at a flat in Talbot Green, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Despite swift medical response, Joanne succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The suspects, Marcus Huntley, Kristina Ginova, Joshua Gordon, Melissa Quailey-Dashper, Tony Porter, and Jordan Mills-Smith, are currently on trial at Cardiff Crown Court facing charges related to the murder, which they all deny.
According to the prosecution, the shooting was linked to a conflict between two rival drug syndicates in the area. One group, led by Joshua Gordon, known as Rico or Reece, had expanded its operations to South Wales, clashing with a rival gang led by Daniel ‘Jimmy’ Joseph. The alleged assailants, including Marcus Huntley, were said to have been sent to the location where the victim was staying.
The prosecution claims that although Marcus Huntley may have pulled the trigger, all defendants are collectively accountable for the murder of Joanne Penney. The court was informed that the real target was likely Joanne’s friend, who shared physical similarities with her and had a baby, potentially leading to the mistaken identity.
The trial is ongoing as further details emerge.
