Defence Secretary John Healey has issued a stern warning to Vladimir Putin regarding a Russian spy vessel that was spotted near UK waters, where it reportedly targeted RAF pilots with lasers.
Mr. Healey condemned the “extremely hazardous action” by Russia and emphasized that the UK is prepared with military responses should the Yantar move south. This incident marks the second time the ship has entered British waters in the past year, with the purpose of surveilling critical undersea cables.
During a press conference at Downing Street, the Defence Secretary stated, “At this moment, a Russian intelligence-gathering ship, the Yantar, is positioned on the northern edge of UK waters, having crossed into the UK’s broader waters over recent weeks. The vessel is specifically equipped for intelligence operations and mapping of undersea cable networks.”
“We have deployed a Royal Navy frigate and RAF aircraft to monitor and track the movements of this vessel, during which the Yantar directed lasers at our pilots. Such actions by Russia are highly risky, and this marks the second instance this year where this vessel has ventured into UK waters.”
He added, addressing Russia and Putin directly, “We are aware of your activities, and if the Yantar heads south this week, we are prepared.”
This warning followed a report from a parliamentary committee highlighting the UK’s lack of a comprehensive defense plan against military threats. Healey announced plans to enhance Britain’s readiness, identifying at least 13 locations for potential new arms production facilities.
The Yantar is part of Russia’s fleet designated to target vital undersea cables linking the UK and Europe, crucial for civilian and military communications, as well as energy transmission.
Describing the ship’s capabilities, Mr. Healey mentioned it is designed for surveillance during peacetime and potential sabotage in conflict. When asked about the use of lasers against pilots, he confirmed, “This is the first incident where the Yantar has targeted British RAF personnel in this manner.”
Taking the evolving threats into account, the Defence Secretary emphasized the need for increased defense capabilities in what he termed a “new era of hard power.” He warned of a changing and more perilous world scenario, citing recent conflicts and cyber threats faced by the UK.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Budget, Mr. Healey assured that there would be no regression in the strength of the UK’s armed forces.
