Donald Trump criticized Ukraine’s leadership on social media for not showing appreciation to the US for a contentious peace proposal. The US President reportedly issued a deadline for Kyiv to accept a 28-point plan involving concessions to Russia, such as reducing Ukraine’s military strength and abandoning plans to join NATO.
Discussions regarding the peace plan took place in Geneva on Sunday, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicating that the American proposals could align with Ukraine’s interests. However, Trump expressed frustration at Ukraine’s lack of gratitude and Europe’s continued oil purchases from Russia.
European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of respecting borders and maintaining Ukraine’s armed forces intact to safeguard the country against potential threats. While acknowledging some positive elements in the US plan, leaders like Keir Starmer raised concerns and advocated for a just and lasting peace.
In a conversation with Trump, Starmer emphasized the need for collaboration to achieve a fair resolution in Ukraine. UK Cabinet Minister Heidi Alexander stressed the necessity for Ukrainians to determine their future and suggested that further refinement of the peace plan is required. She also highlighted the UK’s role in influencing global dialogue for peace efforts.
