A popular TikTok influencer has been abducted and publicly killed in front of her family members.
Mariam Cissé, with nearly 100,000 followers on TikTok, often shared content showcasing life in her hometown of Tonka in the northern Timbuktu region.
Despite her known support for the military and occasional appearances in army attire in her videos, Mariam’s content maintained a lighthearted tone, offering a humorous take on living in a volatile environment.
In her twenties, Mariam was captured by a jihadist group while live streaming from a nearby town on November 6. The militants accused her of aiding the Malian army by disclosing their movements.
According to Mariam’s brother, she was apprehended on Thursday and subsequently transported by motorcycle to Tonka, where she was fatally shot in Independence Square as her brother witnessed the tragic event.
Reports suggest that Mariam was targeted for allegedly filming the jihadists on behalf of the Malian army, leading to her brutal assassination, described by a security source as a barbaric act.
The shocking murder of Mariam has deeply impacted Mali, already grappling with a fuel blockade imposed by a terrorist faction. The blockade, initiated by an al-Qaeda affiliate attacking fuel transporters on major routes, has caused severe fuel shortages, particularly in Bamako, prompting closures of educational institutions and disrupting daily life.
Due to Mali’s landlocked status, all fuel imports are reliant on road transport from neighboring countries like Senegal and Ivory Coast.
Despite the military’s assumption of power in 2021 with promises to enhance security, the persistence of jihadist activities has hindered progress, leaving significant portions of northern and eastern Mali beyond governmental control, as reported by the BBC.
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, chair of the African Union commission, expressed concerns over the deteriorating security situation exacerbated by terrorist blockades, which have severely impacted access to essential resources and worsened humanitarian conditions for civilians. He strongly condemned deliberate attacks on innocent civilians, emphasizing the unacceptable loss of lives and heightened instability.
