Amid the chaos of explosions and gunfire outside, a British surgeon in Gaza, Dr. Mohammed Tahir, attends to severely injured children in the hospital where he serves. Observing the young patients with bullet and bomb wounds, he somberly predicts the fate of each, stating, “This kid is dying… this kid is probably going to die… this kid is dying as well… and this kid is probably gonna die too.”
This poignant scene encapsulates the grim reality of the Israel-Gaza conflict, which has inflicted immense suffering on countless civilians at the hands of Israeli forces. Dr. Tahir’s experiences are featured in a new 90-minute documentary, “The Mission,” chronicling his final four-month mission in Gaza’s war-torn hospitals.
Having previously completed two assignments in Gaza, Dr. Tahir, a Welsh-born doctor raised in Queen’s Park, west London, recounts his harrowing encounters with tragedy and loss in the documentary. The film captures moments of compassion as he comforts grieving individuals and tends to the gravely wounded, including the heart-wrenching task of confirming the passing of young patients.
Reflecting on his time in Gaza, Dr. Tahir vividly describes the overwhelming scenes of bloodshed and despair in the hospitals, where he worked tirelessly in the face of relentless Israeli attacks that targeted medical facilities and equipment. He uncovers evidence of what he believes are war crimes, including the deliberate destruction of medical resources and the use of lethal weaponry that indiscriminately harms civilians.
Despite the immense challenges and atrocities witnessed, Dr. Tahir’s efforts have also brought hope and healing to many, such as Mariam, a nine-year-old girl who underwent a groundbreaking surgery to reattach her severed arm. While Mariam faced complications leading to amputation, she is on the path to recovery, with ongoing support from Dr. Tahir and plans for future care.
Moved by his experiences in Gaza, Dr. Tahir has established a charity to aid victims of conflict, driven by a deep sense of duty to alleviate suffering and promote justice. The documentary, directed by Mike Lerner of Roast Beef Productions, aims to shed light on the realities of the Gaza war and the resilience of its people. It will premiere at the 2025 London Palestine Film Festival, offering a poignant portrayal of humanity amidst tragedy and the unwavering dedication of medical professionals like Dr. Tahir.
