A gentleman received a grim prognosis of just 18 months to live following complaints of abdominal tightness during a doctor’s visit. Dan Godley, aged 30, was diagnosed with stage three pancreatic cancer at the age of 28. Shortly after learning about his condition, he embarked on Folfirinox chemotherapy, only to discover that the tumor was intricately entwined around a crucial artery. Despite the devastating news, Dan proposed to his partner Anna, aged 30, in the hospital moments after being informed of his prognosis.
Although the civil servant initially struggled to grasp the reality of his cancer diagnosis, he eventually came to terms with it. Dan recalled the moment of receiving the news, mentioning the initial disbelief that it didn’t immediately sink in. Following consultations, Dan underwent a unique treatment known as Irreversible Electroporation intending to eliminate cancerous cells. However, during the procedure, medical professionals opted to perform a total pancreatectomy, which involved the removal of his pancreas, gallbladder, and common bile duct.
The surgical intervention, recognized for its limited efficacy and scarcity of data due to its rarity, was considered a challenging endeavor by the medical team. Despite being informed that treating the cancer might not be feasible, Dan’s young age and overall health prompted the surgeons to proceed with the operation. The situation appeared dire, but Dan remained optimistic, considering any form of intervention a small victory.
In a remarkable turn of events, Dan, diagnosed in November 2021, is now cancer-free post the groundbreaking surgery, a possibility he was previously unaware of. Pancreatic cancer stands as the fifth most fatal cancer in the UK, claiming approximately 9,000 lives annually. Typically uncommon in individuals under 40, the disease primarily affects those aged 75 and above. Dan’s cancer-free status was confirmed in July 2022, with subsequent rounds of chemotherapy concluding in February of the following year.
Since then, Dan has tied the knot with Anna and resumed cycling four days a week and attending the gym. Reflecting on his journey, Dan expressed astonishment at the surgical outcome, admitting that the news of the tumor’s complete removal took time to register amidst the post-operative haze. Drawing attention to the recent passing of Grammy-winning singer D’Angelo due to pancreatic cancer, Dan emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the disease. He stressed the significance of early detection and highlighted the impact of public figures, like D’Angelo, in shedding light on such health concerns.
