“Teenager Dies After Eating Infected Slug at Party”

A tragic incident occurred at a birthday party where a teenager, Sam Ballard, from Sydney, Australia, became paralyzed and eventually passed away after consuming a slug as part of a dare. The young rugby player ingested the slug without knowing it was infected with a deadly parasite known as rat lungworm disease, typically found in rodents.

Following the dare in 2010, Sam started experiencing severe leg pains but initially did not fall ill. Concerned about the slug consumption, he confided in his mother, who reassured him that it was harmless. However, Sam later developed a brain infection, leading to a 420-day coma upon which he woke up paralyzed from the neck down. He faced challenges such as seizures, body temperature regulation issues, and required tube feeding. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 28 in 2018, with his family and friends by his side.

Recounting the evening of the party, a friend, Jimmy, recalled how the dare unfolded as they were socializing. Another friend, Michael Sheasby, described the shocking sight of seeing Sam in the hospital for the first time post-party. Despite the devastating impact on Sam and his family, his mother Katie expressed no blame towards his friends, acknowledging their camaraderie.

In the years following the incident, Katie advocated for Sam’s care, facing challenges with the Australian government’s disability insurance scheme. Initially granted a sum that was later reduced, Sam’s family and friends rallied for increased support, ultimately leading to a positive outcome with the decision being overturned.
