Teen Survivor Outwits Serial Killer, Empowers Others

A 15-year-old girl cleverly outwitted a Navy veteran who admired Ted Bundy, enduring 18 hours of harrowing torture and sexual abuse. Kara Robinson Chamberlain, now a mother of three, had her life forever changed while tending to plants in her friend’s front yard in June 2002. Richard Evonitz, 38, approached the young girl, offering her pamphlets.

Kara recounted the chilling encounter, stating that Evonitz brandished a gun, coerced her into his car, and transported her to his residence, where he restrained her with handcuffs and a gag. Despite the terrifying situation, Kara remained composed, carefully noting details of her surroundings and formulating a plan to escape.

During her captivity, Kara meticulously observed Evonitz’s residence, including details like magnets on the fridge and caged animals. When she saw an opportunity as Evonitz slept, Kara managed to free herself and flee, seeking help from passersby who guided her to the police station.

Kara’s bravery led to the revelation of Evonitz’s connection to unsolved killings of three girls in Virginia. Investigators uncovered evidence linking him to the crimes, ultimately realizing he was a serial killer. Evonitz, after a brief period as a fugitive, was located in Florida, where he ended his life during a confrontation with law enforcement.

Kara’s courageous actions not only saved her own life but also provided closure to families of Evonitz’s victims. She has since dedicated herself to empowering other survivors, sharing her story to inspire hope and resilience. Through her ordeal, Kara found purpose in helping others and has transitioned from law enforcement to advocacy for survivors.
