“Survivor’s Journey: From Trauma to Triumph”

Ryan Harland grew up admiring his older brother Kevin, whom he considers a hero. Unbeknownst to him in his youth, Kevin shielded him from a distressing family secret. Unfortunately, Kevin passed away at 33 in 2007, leaving Ryan to honor his memory. Ryan now lives in Chatham, Kent, and has two children. He shared his challenging upbringing with the Mirror, emphasizing his struggles with the term “father” due to his father’s abusive behavior.

Raised on the Isle of Sheppey, Ryan faced difficulties due to his father’s shadow over their family life. Despite his mother’s love and Kevin’s protective role, Ryan’s childhood was marred by his father’s abusive actions. As a young boy, Ryan witnessed his mother endure physical abuse, which deeply affected him and Kevin, who bore the brunt of their father’s depravity.

Following his parents’ separation at age 11, Ryan began to understand the severity of his father’s actions. Despite his father’s deceptive facade in public, Ryan eventually uncovered the truth about his father’s disturbing behaviors, leading to a period of fear and turmoil in his life.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Ryan faced his own traumatic experience of sexual abuse at the hands of his father, leading to years of silence and internal struggle. It wasn’t until preparing for his first marriage that Ryan found the courage to disclose his past to his loved ones, eventually revealing the extent of Kevin’s own abuse.

Kevin, who had distanced himself from their past, tragically faced health issues, including HIV and AIDS. His life took a drastic turn when he was date-raped in Manchester, further complicating his already fragile health. Shortly after, Kevin passed away from a burst aneurysm, leaving Ryan with regret and unresolved emotions.

Despite the lack of closure in seeking justice against their father, Ryan’s journey toward healing began when he sought mental health support and was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Through therapy and self-reflection, Ryan found solace in sharing his story, eventually becoming an advocate for survivors of trauma.

Today, Ryan works as an auditor for Morrisons and aspires to become a professional speaker, empowering others to overcome their past traumas. Through personal growth and resilience, Ryan has transformed his life, symbolized by his completion of the London Marathon and the publication of a memoir detailing his mental health journey.

Reflecting on his brother’s legacy, Ryan acknowledges the profound impact Kevin had on his life and continues to honor his memory. Despite the challenges he has faced, Ryan remains determined to inspire others and reclaim his sense of empowerment.
