An immoral soldier conducted a despicable sextortion scheme, coercing minors into engaging in sexual acts for him.
Austen Fleming, 29, described as “depraved,” targeted nearly 90 children online while stationed at RAF Dishforth in North Yorkshire. Posing as an appealing woman on fake social media profiles, the predator recorded interactions with the children to manipulate them into providing more explicit content.
Upon refusal, the soldier threatened to expose the images to the victims’ families and friends, using this leverage to extort further explicit material from the young individuals.
Initially apprehended on November 14, 2022, Fleming’s residence was searched for evidence, revealing the extensive nature of his offenses, necessitating the tracing of victims nationwide.
Subsequently, Fleming faced additional charges of producing indecent images of children and facilitating child sexual offenses. Following initial questioning and release on bail for evidence retrieval, investigators determined that the predator had committed the crimes between December 2020 and January 2023.
Fleming was re-arrested on December 16, 2024, facing multiple allegations including blackmail, inducing a child to engage in sexual activities, promoting the exploitation of a child, and disseminating indecent images of children.
One 15-year-old boy, deeply affected by Fleming’s sextortion threats on Snapchat, attempted suicide, as reported by the Daily Record. Testimonies in Leeds Crown Court described other victims left traumatized, crying, and trembling in fear due to the ordeal imposed by the offender.
Sentenced to 24 years in prison with an additional three years on extended license, Fleming confessed to 83 cyber-enabled child sexual abuse and exploitation crimes. His victims ranged from 10 to 17 years old.
The terrorized victims pleaded with Fleming not to share their images online, only to face escalated demands for more graphic content. The predator coerced minors into sending explicit images alongside sleeping siblings and filming sexual acts involving family pets. The distress inflicted was so severe that one child vomited when recounting the events to their mother.
Judge Ray Singh highlighted how social media granted Fleming easy access to victims, denouncing his depravity without limits. The court identified 61 victims and noted 27 others who remained unidentified, painting a grim picture of Fleming’s actions and the impact on numerous young lives.
Detective Constable Tom Sutcliffe, leading the investigation from the Online Child Abuse Team, labeled Fleming as a depraved threat to young people, emphasizing the need for stringent monitoring throughout his prison term and beyond.
