Mitchell Lawrie has made history as the youngest player ever to secure three senior men’s titles, breaking Luke Littler’s previous record. The talented teenage darts player from Scotland claimed victory at the WDF Irish Classic in Killarney on Saturday, just four days after turning 15.
In an impressive performance, Lawrie defeated Ronan McDonagh in the final match, showcasing his skill with four 180s and an outstanding average of 98.60, ultimately winning 5-1. Prior to this, Lawrie had already clinched the Irish Classic Youths title by defeating Kaya Basal 4-1 with an average score of 90.95.
During the event at the INEC Arena in Kerry, Ireland, Lawrie’s father, Fraser, and grandfather, Dougie, were present to support him as he claimed another title. Lawrie surpassed Littler’s achievement, who was 15 years, five months, and four days old when he set the record, making Lawrie five months younger at the time of his victory.
Lawrie is now set to compete in the upcoming men’s and youth WDF world championships at Lakeside later this month. Meanwhile, the current PDC World Champion will be defending his title at Alexandra Palace. Lawrie, who previously secured wins at the British Open and Welsh Open earlier in the year, is preparing for a potential showdown against his predecessor.
Although Lawrie will have to wait until he turns 16 to face Littler in PDC competitions, his family is fully invested in his journey. In an interview with The Sun, Lawrie’s grandfather emphasized that they want Lawrie to be himself and not just be compared to Littler, highlighting their close friendship and history of playing against each other.
Dougie also mentioned that he was the one who taught Lawrie how to play darts, instilling in him a competitive and aggressive playing style from a young age. As Lawrie continues to excel in the sport, his family remains proud of his accomplishments and is supportive of his darts career.
