“Royal Mail Warns of Delays in 100 UK Postcodes”

Royal Mail has issued a caution regarding potential delays in service across more than 100 postcodes in the UK. The postal service identified 38 delivery offices that could experience disruptions due to inclement weather and increased sick leave among workers, affecting approximately 100 postcodes nationwide.

A spokesperson for the company attributed the short-term disruptions to adverse weather conditions, including storms named Goretti, Ingrid, and Chandra in January, coupled with higher-than-average sick leave rates among employees. Royal Mail assured customers that most mail is delivered on schedule and acknowledged the frustration caused when deliveries are delayed.

In response to any route delays, the company stated that it would mobilize additional support to expedite deliveries and minimize disruptions. This announcement follows a report by the BBC indicating that some letters were being held in Royal Mail offices for extended periods, with claims from anonymous postal workers that packages were being given priority over letters in certain depots.

Royal Mail highlighted the increase in parcel deliveries due to the rise in online shopping, while the volume of addressed letters being processed within its network has declined. With nearly two million served postcodes, Royal Mail is committed to delivering mail six days a week, striving to maintain punctual delivery of both letters and parcels.

Last year, regulator Ofcom approved Royal Mail’s proposal to discontinue second-class letter deliveries on Saturdays, transitioning to a service schedule of delivery every other weekday. Although initially piloted in 35 delivery offices, the nationwide implementation has been postponed due to unresolved negotiations with the Communication Workers Union.
