A retired couple, Barbara and Lawrence Blackwood, aged 72 and 75, have shared how they make money and explore the UK through home-sitting. They embarked on home-sitting in 2017 to stay active during retirement. Home-sitting involves caring for someone’s home and sometimes their pets while they are away.
Barbara, a former administrative secretary, and Lawrence, a retired police officer, now undertake about one home-sit per month, which keeps them away from home for almost half of the year. Barbara expressed, “After retiring, we didn’t want to be idle. Home-sitting was a perfect fit for us.”
Home-sitters typically earn a minimum of £333.06 for a two-week assignment without pets. Taking care of two dogs and a cat fetches £367.92 for the same duration. The responsibilities entail about one hour and 45 minutes of daily duties and include a daily food allowance. Additionally, travel expenses are covered for both the initial meeting and journeys to and from assignments.
For the Blackwoods, who reside in Perthshire, Scotland, home-sitting has not only provided income but also helped them save on utility bills, especially during cold winter months. Barbara estimated that during a winter assignment of around three to four weeks, they save about £47 monthly. From September to April, their average monthly saving is about £31.
They also enjoy extensive travel within Scotland, exploring various locations they might not have otherwise visited. Lawrence mentioned, “We’ve traveled all over Scotland and cherished every place we’ve been to. The flexibility and diversity are what make this experience exceptional.”
Barbara emphasized that their top priority is the well-being of the animals they care for. She stated, “Our role is to ensure that pets feel safe, secure, and comfortable in their usual routine.” After almost a decade of home-sitting, they have numerous repeat assignments, with one family welcoming them back regularly since their start in 2017.
Barbara expressed, “We have never regretted it. Home-sitting has given us a lifestyle we genuinely adore.”
