Sickening surveillance footage revealed a sexual offender lurking in a nightclub in Scotland, targeting victims just before drugging and sexually assaulting two women. Kenan Baki, aged 46, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for raping one woman and sexually abusing another after spiking their drinks at Society nightclub in Kirkcaldy, Fife, on September 2, 2023. Prosecutors at the High Court in Edinburgh presented video evidence showing the perpetrator moving around the club, seemingly scouting for unattended drinks at tables while seeking out solitary women.
Additional surveillance footage shown to the jury captured a woman collapsing in a chair at Baki’s nearby barber shop after he escorted her there when she became ill from the drugs. She was observed conversing with him as he touched her hair and used a hairdryer on her face, feigning a hairstyling session. The victim then appeared to lose consciousness, her head falling back in the chair. Baki proceeded to move the unconscious woman to the back of the shop, where he committed the assault, as reported by the Daily Record.
During the trial, it was disclosed that earlier that evening, Baki had drugged and sexually assaulted another woman by surreptitiously adding an unknown substance to her drink. Witnesses viewed surveillance footage of the woman feeling unwell, struggling to move and remain alert, before collapsing. Concerned members of the public later intervened to remove the victim from Baki’s presence.
Baki received an extended 11-year sentence, with nine years to be served in prison, at the High Court in Kilmarnock for convictions of rape and sexual assault. He was also mandated to be on the sex offenders register for an indefinite period and subjected to a non-harassment order.
Fiona Kirkby, Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, expressed, “Kenan Baki represents a significant threat to women due to his sexually deviant and predatory behaviors. The prosecution highlighted his pursuit of these two women, deliberately drugging them to exploit their vulnerability.”
The prosecutor continued, “He has now been held responsible for these abhorrent actions, sending a clear message to those contemplating sexual harm. I encourage anyone impacted by similar offenses to consider coming forward when they are ready. Our team of trauma-informed staff is here to listen and support you as we strive to achieve justice through all available means.”
Between 2023 and 2024, 168 cases of drink spiking were reported to authorities in Scotland. However, only nine of these cases were forwarded to the Crown Office, with the rest deemed lacking in sufficient evidence.
In Scotland, incidents of drink spiking are not prosecuted as a distinct crime but are handled as drugging cases where individuals are administered substances without their knowledge or prosecuted under the Sexual Offences Act.
