An urgent situation has been announced at an NHS hospital due to an ongoing problem. Arrowe Park Hospital, which is part of the Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, had to halt elective procedures last week to address the issue. The trust has taken steps to address the situation by purchasing new instruments and borrowing equipment from nearby NHS facilities.
According to an internal communication obtained by the Liverpool Echo, the trust is also seeking assistance from other NHS trusts in the region to help mitigate the disruption. Patients were redirected to Aintree Hospital and the Countess of Chester Hospital during this period.
In a message sent to staff at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, it was stated that an ongoing issue in the Sterile Service Department affecting surgical instruments prompted the decision to pause elective activity last week to investigate. Subsequently, a critical incident was declared at the trust with command and control measures put in place.
To minimize the impact on patients, the hospital has procured additional surgical instruments and is collaborating with regional partners to secure more supplies. The incident has caused worry among patients and their families, with concerns raised about delayed surgeries due to the unavailability of safe and sterile equipment.
A spokesperson for Wirral University Teaching Hospital mentioned that a Critical Incident was declared due to unresolved issues affecting surgical instruments, leading to the pause in elective activities. Emphasizing patient safety as the top priority, the trust has robust plans in place to manage the situation and is seeking support from other trusts to lessen the impact on patients.
The situation has highlighted the importance of patient safety and efficient operational management in healthcare facilities.
