A cutting-edge city project worth £160 million is taking shape on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, aiming to rival popular European holiday destinations like Spain, Italy, and Greece.
Known as New El-Alamein City, the development is set to become the new focal point of the Egyptian Riviera, offering pristine white beaches, clear waters, and pleasant November temperatures around 24°C.
Situated within the Marsa Matruh governorate, the city spans nearly 49,000 feddans (approximately 200 million square meters) and is strategically located about 60 kilometers along the Alexandria–Matrouh international highway.
Upon completion, New El-Alamein City is projected to accommodate nearly three million residents, positioning itself as one of the most advanced urban centers in the Middle East. The initial phase of the project is already in progress, with plans to house around 400,000 individuals.
The city will feature a diverse range of amenities, including international hotels, upscale resorts, a private university, and designated structures for governmental use. Infrastructure development, such as water treatment facilities, sewage systems, and smart electricity grids, is a collaborative effort between Egypt’s Urban Communities Authority and the Armed Forces Engineering Authority.
New El-Alamein City will be divided into distinct zones for tourism, historical preservation, and residential purposes, offering a mix of accommodation options from luxurious resorts to modern apartments. The seafront will host an expansive promenade with various dining, shopping, and entertainment venues.
Central to the city’s cultural offerings will be the City of Culture and Arts, a vast complex featuring a theater, opera house, cinema, and production studios, solidifying New El-Alamein as a hub for arts and tourism.
The project aims to alleviate population density in Cairo by providing a sustainable urban alternative supported by smart transportation systems and renewable energy sources. With over 30 developers authorized to build more than 30,000 hotel rooms in the initial phase, progress is well underway.
Officials tout New El-Alamein as a transformative development for the Mediterranean region, poised to challenge Europe’s coastal attractions with its blend of sunshine, luxury, and modern conveniences just a short distance from the UK.
