A mother who initially thought her back pain stemmed from a pulled muscle later discovered it was a sign of a severe illness when scans unveiled a spine fracture caused by tumors. Rachel McCormack, aged 38, successfully battled stage two breast cancer in 2015 and received a clean bill of health post-chemotherapy and surgery, with regular mammograms for monitoring.
In December 2024, Rachel began experiencing lower back discomfort, attributing it to gradual muscle strain. Initially seeking physiotherapy after consulting a GP, she escalated her concerns to her breast care team at Scarborough Hospital as the pain worsened. An MRI scan confirmed spinal vertebrae fractures due to tumors.
Diagnosed with stage four metastatic breast cancer in July 2025, Rachel is currently undergoing a 12-week regimen of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted body therapy to reduce tumor size. Despite an uncertain prognosis, her loved ones are fundraising to buy a camper van to provide Rachel, her partner James, 39, and their five-year-old daughter Iris with moments of respite between treatments.
