“MI5 Warns MPs of Chinese Spy Recruitment”

MI5 has raised a red flag for Members of Parliament (MPs) following the detection of multiple attempts by Chinese spies to “recruit and groom” individuals with insider access to Westminster.

During a session in the House of Commons, Security Minister Dan Jarvis disclosed that Chinese intelligence operatives are masquerading as companies or external recruitment agents to ensnare MPs, Lords, and Parliamentary personnel. The tactic involves the use of LinkedIn profiles under the identities of two women to gather intelligence.

Addressing a shocked audience of MPs, Jarvis stated, “Today, MI5 issued a warning to all members of this House, the Lords, and Parliamentary staff about the ongoing targeting of our democratic institutions by Chinese operatives.”

The minister stressed that China places a minimal value threshold on sensitive information. He elaborated, “Our intelligence agencies caution that China is actively seeking to enlist and nurture individuals with access to crucial data about Parliament and the UK government, with MI5 indicating that this operation is carried out by a cohort of Chinese intelligence officers concealing their identities through front companies or external recruiters.”

Jarvis emphasized that the concern extends beyond lawmakers, pointing out that staff within Parliament, economists, think tank professionals, geopolitical advisors, and government officials have all been approached due to their connections and proximity to politicians.

He urged vigilance among parliamentarians and their staff, underscoring China’s broad interpretation of valuable information.

In response to the situation, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper engaged with her Chinese counterpart, asserting a zero-tolerance policy towards such activities. Jarvis declared that the government will take measures to combat “covert political funding” to root out potential spies.

Additionally, efforts are underway to empower authorities with new tools to counter foreign interference.

In a separate communication, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle notified parliamentarians about the Chinese Ministry of State Security’s endeavors to establish contact with individuals in Westminster. The aim is to gather information and lay the groundwork for long-term relationships, leveraging professional networking platforms, recruitment agencies, and consultants acting on behalf of the Chinese MSS.

The alert specifically identified two headhunters, Amanda Qiu from BR-YR Executive Search and Shirly Shen from Internship Union, as individuals using LinkedIn profiles to communicate on behalf of China’s MSS.

According to the MI5 alert, the Chinese MSS is actively seeking sensitive information about the UK to gain a strategic advantage. The alert highlighted typical tactics and methods employed by a specific group of highly active officers within the MSS.

Jarvis announced a £170 million allocation to enhance the sovereign-encrypted technology used by officials and a £130 million investment to bolster the UK’s resilience against threats posed by countries like China.
