In September 2012, Dan Markel, a dedicated father, Canadian-born lawyer, and law professor, was on a business trip. Upon his return to Tallahassee, Florida, he was shocked to find his wife, Wendi, a clinical law professor, and their children had left, along with much of their furniture, and divorce papers were left behind. Their six-year marriage ended, leading to a contentious separation.
Dan and Wendi’s divorce was finalized in 2013, with a joint custody agreement in place. Despite Wendi’s desire to relocate to Miami near her parents, the judge deemed it too distant from Dan and denied her request, causing tension with the Adelson family.
The Adelsons, a wealthy family involved in dentistry, reportedly offered Dan $1 million through Wendi to allow her to move back home. Dan later sought an order to prevent Wendi’s mother, Donna Adelson, from unsupervised visits with the children due to concerns about negative influence.
Tragedy struck in July 2014 when Dan was fatally shot in his car outside his home. It was believed to be linked to the custody battle, leading to a complex investigation. In 2016, three individuals, including Katherine Magbanua, were arrested for coordinating the murder, with connections to the Adelson family.
The case unfolded with Rivera admitting guilt and receiving a reduced sentence, while Charles Adelson and Magbanua were later convicted. Charles, accused of orchestrating the hit, was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Following Charles’ trial, Wendi testified about her parents’ animosity towards Dan and their involvement in the plot. Charles claimed innocence, alleging extortion, but evidence suggested his active role in the scheme. Adelson, labeled the mastermind, was convicted of murder, conspiracy, and solicitation.
In a dramatic turn, Adelson attempted to flee the country but was apprehended before departure. Despite maintaining her innocence, she was sentenced to life in prison. The case concluded with Adelson becoming the fifth person convicted in Dan’s murder, concluding a decade-long legal saga.
